Skinimalism for more naturalness: The new minimalism in skin care

NEW MINIMALISM IN SKIN CARE

Margit Rüdiger  | August 24, 2021
We know the term minimalism from art. It emerged in the USA in the early 1960s as a countermovement to expressionism. Artists concentrated only on the essentials in their works. The original art movement has long since developed into a lifestyle concept that encompasses many areas of life. Skin care is now also part of it.

The term skinimalism was announced as a 2021 trend by the social media platform Pinterest earlier this year. This was triggered by the increasing number of searches for topics such as "natural makeup" and "radiant skin naturally". The search term "natural skin" alone has recently increased by an incredible 400 percent, and hashtags such as #skinimalism, #skinpositivity and #bodypositivity have become popular on Instagram.

SKINIMALISM FOR MORE NATURALNESS

The idea is not only to focus on fewer but effective skincare and makeup products, but also to show your skin as it really looks - not distorted by layers of primer, foundation, contouring powder and blusher or by social media filters that hide even the smallest pore. Real skin has imperfections, spots and pimples. It's alive. And you can stand by that. By now everyone knows that absolutely flawless skin is a big lie. It simply doesn't exist, even if filters, Photoshop, photo-editing apps and airbrushed beauty brand campaigns want us to believe it.

The fact is that too much of any cosmetic product is harmful to our skin. If it is covered with various layers of make-up such as foundation and powder, and perhaps even Kardashian contouring, the pores can no longer breathe. Skin irritations and reactions are the result. The same applies to an over-dimensioned care program. Even the healthiest skin becomes weak if it is overloaded with facial oil, essence, peeling, sheet mask, serum, etc., etc.

If you then use products from different brands, you can't avoid the unwanted combination of different active ingredients. This can lead to undesirable reactions. Some ingredients actively fight each other, others have opposite effects, and still others have effects that are far too similar and fizzle out without having any effect. And that's not all. Poor product quality and dosages that are too low can also damage the skin in the long term.

U-turn comes from Korea

Skinimalism is made up of "skin" and "minimalism". This means a well-thought-out care routine that consists of a few but effective products with coordinated active ingredients. Sustainability and clean beauty come into play here. It is astonishing that the skin care trend was born in a country where women often applied 17 or more layers of makeup to their skin in the morning - namely Korea. A face like a flawless canvas is no longer in fashion there either. The corona pandemic with home offices and compulsory masks has certainly contributed to this. Modern Korean women now prefer products that fulfill several benefits at the same time. This saves time, effort and money. Not just in care. When applying makeup, the skin is allowed to shine through - even with small mistakes. A BB cream is usually enough to get Glow 4.0.

HOW TO BECOME A SKINIMALIST

But how do you slim down your usual beauty routine in a sensible way and become a skinimalist? First of all, you should think about your current skin needs . From a pale complexion to acne and rosacea to fine lines and wrinkles, every skin has individual care requirements. On this basis, you should build the three most important pillars of your daily routine - cleanse, care, protect.

With “Doctor Mi! medical skincare” it is very easy to achieve balanced, healthy and radiant skin in just a few steps. The active ingredient retinol runs like a thread through the entire line. Better known as vitamin A, it has been a fixture in skin care for decades. Countless studies prove its power when it comes to collagen formation, barrier protection, skin metabolism regulation, pH value stabilization and the reduction of uneven pigmentation. Added to this is the innovative TECMi!® technology . This double encapsulation of the molecules allows the active ingredients to penetrate the dermis, where the crucial cells for skin renewal are located. In addition, the active ingredients are better protected against external influences such as light, which could damage them.
